Seminar: Basic Structural Concepts for the Non-Engineer

“This is the one seminar that every framer, designer, code official, and saw-happy plumber should take. You’ll learn the basics of how structures work, what’s dangerous, what’s not, and why. Then during Day 2 you’ll actually design beams, joists, rafters, posts, and footings using ConstructionCalc software. It will be the most empowering two days of your construction career, I guarantee it.”

TK Garrison, Professional Engineer and Author.

I (TK Garrison) will be your instructor for both days.  My style is interactive - I want to hear your stories and experiences as we cover the topics in my book, Basic Structural Concepts for the Non-Engineer. Specifically, here’s what I teach during Day 1:

  • Loads: Live, Dead, Snow, Wind, and Earthquake
  • Beams and other bending members (joists, rafters, girders, headers)
  • Tension and compression members (posts, columns, cables, tie rods)
  • Wood as a structural material
  • Steel as a structural material
  • Concrete as a structural material
  • Lateral load design (wind and earthquake forces and how they’re resisted)
  • Foundations
  • Retaining walls

Day 2:
Day 2 is spent designing beams, joists, rafters, posts, and footings using ConstructionCalc(tm) software. Attendees should bring their laptop computers with Microsoft Excel 2003 or later. Sharing computers (two or three persons per computer) is highly recommended.

 Your booking fee includes:probeam-screenshot.jpg

  • A copy of my book, Basic Structural Concepts for the Non-Engineer. This is the course book for the seminar.
  • A copy of ConstructionCalc’s Basic Structural Bundle(tm) software. You’ll get your own copy to keep (a $208 value) and to use during Day 2’s lessons. Microsoft Excel 2003 or later is required.

What You Provide:

  • The venue (meeting room).
  • Desks or tables and chairs for your participants.
  • A white board or easel.
  • A projector stand.
  • A projection screen.
  • Water, food, refreshments as you see fit.
  • PA system if more than 20 attendees.
  • It is recommended, though not required, that each attendee bring a laptop computer with Excel 2003 or later to Day 2. Attendees can share computers too. Experience has shown that two or three persons per laptop works well.

What I Provide:

  • My own laptop computer and projector.
  • A course book for each attendee.
  • A version of ConstructionCalc Basic Structural Bundle software on CD for each attendee.
